Seven thousand, six hundred and seventy-one days. That’s how long Shuteen Erdenebaatar had been alive when she sat down at the piano on her 21st birthday and wrote this. Add up the digits and you get 21. It’s a puzzle, a birthday card and a piece of music, all in one.
“Page #7671,” the second single from Bright Folk, opens in a hush: piano and Jakob Manz’s alto sax in a quiet, melancholic conversation. Then bass and drums step in, the quartet gets restless, and the whole thing starts to climb. Minutes later it ends in a wild, joyous finale that doesn’t fade out. It just lifts off.
It’s playful, searching jazz about time and growth, and you’ll want to hear it more than once.
Stream “Page #7671” now, then pre-order Bright Folk before it arrives November 20 on Motéma. Her third album features her new quartet with Nils Kugelmann on bass, Simon Comté on saxophones, and Amir Bresler on drums, with guest Jakob Manz. It follows her 2025 duo album Under the Same Stars and her German Jazz Award-winning debut, Rising Sun.
