Award-winning Pianist-Composer Shuteen Erdenebaatar Explores Home, Memory, and the Gobi Desert on Her New Quartet Album Bright Folk, out November 20, 2026 via Motéma
Sometimes returning to a familiar place reveals just how much we have changed. A place that once felt like home can suddenly become a reflection of everything that happened in between — the years lived elsewhere, the experiences gathered, the people along the way, and ultimately the new person we’ve become. It’s from within that space between memory and transformation, between belonging and longing, that Mongolian-born, Berlin-based pianist and composer Shuteen Erdenebaatar created her new album Bright Folk.
Bright Folk, her third release on Motéma, out on November 20, continues the artistic journey that began in 2023 with her acclaimed debut album Rising Sun, and continued in high form in 2025 with her lush and well-received piano and contra-alto clarinet duo project, Under the Same Stars. The release of Rising Sun marked a defining transition for Shuteen. Not only did the sun rise, but so did her artistic vision. The album, the first in a trilogy she conceived, introduced her distinctive musical language — a meeting point of classical foundation with contemporary and post-bop jazz improvisation, of Mongolian landscape and metropolitan European life, a language of deeply felt personal stories that told through lilting rhythms, melodies, solos, and band interplay that easily transcends borders to tap into our universal experiences.
At 25, Erdenebaatar released Rising Sun on Motéma, and the album immediately opened international doors, leading to sold-out performances at renowned festivals and concert venues across Europe and beyond. It also earned top-tier recognition, including the German Jazz Award for “Ensemble of the Year” and the Mungun Mod, Mongolia’s highest cultural honor. Her arrival on the international jazz scene was met with widespread critical acclaim: All About Jazz described her as “one of the rising stars in post-bop jazz,” and Jazzwise hailed her as “one of the most exciting young talents in jazz.” Her growing profile was further recognized in 2025, when she placed as a ‘Rising Star: Jazz Artist of the Year’ in the 2025 DownBeat Critics Poll. Meanwhile, through more than 200 concerts, collaborations, and encounters with musicians and audiences across Europe, the UK, and Asia since 2023, Erdenebaatar continues to evolve not only as a pianist, composer, and bandleader, but also as a storyteller.
Through it all she’s continued to explore the many ideas that flow through her being. Her Sun–Stars–Moon Trilogy, which began in quartet with Rising Sun and continued in duo with Under the Same Stars, and is set to conclude in 2027 with Beyond the Moon – recorded this year with her 21-piece chamber jazz orchestra, which allowed her to expand her artistry into even grander sonic landscapes.
Coming between the second and third chapters of the trilogy, Bright Folk emerged as an essential documentation of her increasingly popular quartet’s artistic evolution. The album revisits the energy and interplay of Rising Sun while opening new musical directions, shaped by years of touring, personal experiences, and artistic expansion.
The defining event for Bright Folk was an invitation from the Concerto 21 Foundation for Shuteen’s quartet to perform for the first time in Mongolia in October of 2024. Experiencing her homeland after many years, not only through her own memories but also through the perspectives of her bandmates, opened a new dimension of connection between her past and present. The journey became an exploration of returning, rediscovering, and seeing one’s origins through new eyes.
Among the places that left the deepest impression on her was her first trip to the Gobi Desert, the birthplace of her father. Its vast horizons, silence, and sense of openness became a powerful source of inspiration for the compositions. The Gobi became not simply a backdrop for Bright Folk, but an emotional landscape within the music — a place where heritage, memory, and belonging came together. Like the changing light of the Gobi landscape, the music of Bright Folk exists between different states, carrying both the warmth of memories and the excitement of new beginnings.
At the heart of the album is the idea that home is not always a physical place, but a feeling we carry with us. In “Home Is You”, Shuteen explores how home can be found in people, memories, and objects. Throughout the album, she reflects on the experience of living between worlds, finding beauty in the spaces between nostalgia and possibility, familiarity and change.
The track “Do You See The Stars I See?” came from her personal memories of long summer nights in Mongolia spent looking up at the stars with her father. “Now living thousands of kilometres away, I still look up and wonder: ‘Is he seeing the same stars?’” she relates in her liner notes. “ The stars bridge all that distance — the same light reaching us, wherever we are.” The title track “Bright Folk” tributes people who illuminate our lives through quiet strength, kindness, generosity, creativity, resilience, and belief in others. She explains that the album also honors “the generations before us, the dreamers who worked toward a more open world so that someone like me, a woman from Mongolia, could imagine and ultimately live paths that once seemed impossibly far away.”
The album is brought to life by the members of her international quartet – her long-time collaborator and life partner, the German bassist Nils Kugelmann; the powerful young Belgian tenor & soprano saxophonist Simon Comté; and the nuanced Israeli drummer Amir Bresler. Together, they create a musical environment where lyrical melodies, rhythmic energy, and moments of openness and improvisation flow intuitively with remarkably dynamic flow. Saxophonist Jakob Manz – who toured with the quartet for several years – also elegantly guests on recorder for the title track, and on alto saxophone for enigmatic “Page #7671”, songs performed live for several years before the advent of this recording.
“In the end,” Shuteen summarizes, “Bright folk carries the meaning of home, my life between cultures, and the invisible threads that connect us across time and space. It is a celebration of the people, memories, and landscapes that quietly shape who we are and who we continue to become.”
