Joey Alexander’s Surprise Thelonious Monk Album ‘Joey.Monk.Live!’ Out Now

In celebration of Thelonious Monk’s centennial, Joey Alexander performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Appel Room in June of 2017.

The resulting live album, Joey.Monk.Live! captures Joey’s trio, with bassist Scott Colley and drummer Willie Jones III, exploring Monk’s music in imaginative and deeply-felt ways. In solo, duo and trio performances, Joey pays tribute to the pianist and composer who first made an impression on him and who still serves as a guiding inspiration.

Arturo O’Farrill & Chucho Valdes ‘Familia’ Out Now!

Arturo O’Farrill & Chucho Valdes ‘Familia’ Out Now!

Familia: Tribute to Bebo & Chico is out now!

On this album, jazz greats Arturo O’Farrill and Chucho Valdés craft a brilliant tribute not only to their fathers but also to the next generation, who will carry forward their legacy. The album brings together two influential families in Afro-Cuban music in a celebration of their late patriarchs: pianist, composer, arranger and bandleader Bebo Valdés and composer, arranger and bandleader Chico O´Farrill. It’s a multi-generational tribute led by O’Farrill and Valdés — Bebo and Chico’s sons, and major figures in their own right — which also features the next generation, including pianist Leyanis Valdés, drummer Jessie Valdés, trumpeter Adam O’Farrill and drummer Zack O’Farrill.

DownBeat Premieres New Track by Mark Guiliana Jazz Quartet: “Jersey”

DownBeat Premieres New Track by Mark Guiliana Jazz Quartet: “Jersey”

DownBeat premiered the title track from the new Mark Guiliana Jazz Quartet album, ‘Jersey’ (out 9.29.17)! “On Jersey, the acoustic setting serves as an incubator for Guiliana’s rhythmic creativity and technical facility. Case in point is the title track…Listen with careful attention to the tenor saxophone solo by Rigby, and notice how Guiliana’s skittering snare work and punchy toms add an almost phosphorescent sheen.” – DownBeat

MOTÉMA MUSIC MOURNS THE PASSING OF GERI ALLEN

MOTÉMA MUSIC MOURNS THE PASSING OF GERI ALLEN

As Geri Allen‘s label of record since 2010, we at Motéma are so deeply saddened by the loss that we and the world are facing with the transition of the great Geri Allen.

Ms. Allen was a deeply valued and much loved member of the Motéma family and the jazz community at large. Her singular creativity and astonishing pianistic expression exemplified all that we hope to stand for: unfettered creativity, undeniable authenticity, deep intelligence, natural beauty, fearless individuality, creative freedom, rich complexity, powerful simplicity, dedication to justice and freedom for all, and, most of all, an unfailing commitment to share, through music, the grace that connects us all.

She drew from the full spectrum of human experience to create her extraordinary compositions and improvisations. With a heart that was as big as her ears, she was an uncommonly supportive collaborator, a deeply nurturing educator, and a true champion of those who came before, of those with her on her journey and of those who will now carry the journey forward. Her place in the orchestra of our lives shall sorely be missed. Our hearts go out to her family, whom she cherished and lived for. We are grateful for the legacy of timeless music she has left us with and for her influence, which shall live on in so many wonderful musicians. We are also most honored to have had the enormous opportunity of supporting her musical expressions.
