“Deva Mahal’s singing will give you goosebumps. It’s intoxicating and beautifully sculpted, matching the seductive melodic contours it rolls over. Mournful and soothing, and liberated and dynamic, it is worth the price of admission alone.” – Peter Lindblad, Elmore Magazine
A rare combination of masterful songwriting and breathtaking vocal talent, Deva Mahal steps into the spotlight on her debut, Run Deep, an album of pulse-pounding soul with a decidedly modern edge. Taking inspiration from the idea of strength through vulnerability, Deva powerfully connects with her audience with raw honesty, rich musicality, and emotionally searing songs of love and loss, and the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity.
This sophisticated yet explorational recording features bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Eric Harland with guest appearances on three tracks by saxophonist Joshua Redman. Recorded in Woodstock on August 21, 2017, the day of the solar eclipse, the track “Eclipse” became the centerpiece of the album. The musicians’ spontaneous expression of their experience viewing this rare astronomical event signifies Alexander’s movement into a freer expression.
“The young artist’s musicianship and knowledge of jazz and classical fundamentals are embraced on this free, peaceful 10-minute track. He approached “Eclipse” with subtle sounds and delicate harmonies.” – Rachel George, Billboard
